It’s here, a new year. I have been looking at my fresh new 2014 calendar hanging on my refrigerator with the wide eyed wonder of a child. As I stand in the kitchen gazing at the new year, lyrics from Jennifer Hudson’s song Feeling Good are running through my brain. “It’s a new dawn, a new day, a new life for me.”  That is how I feel today with a ton of resolutions running through my brain. I think my focus word for this year is BETTER. That word was a significant part of my New Year’s Toast, “Welcome 2014, to better loving, better living, and better days.” Don’t get me wrong 2013 was a pretty great year for me; getting my blog up and going, landing the vlog gig with Cheer Channel, watching my son graduate from HS and enter the college world, and watching my girls successfully transition back into public school.  However, with all the new ventures in my life I seemed to put taking care of myself and my health on the back burner. Unfortunately, my body is showing the signs; extra weight, fatigue, and achy joints. Now it is time for this Cheer Mom to make her New Year’s Resolution.

My weight has always been a problem. I have struggled  ever since I was a graduated from high school. The transition to a stressful college schedule and less physical activity meant disaster for my weight. In HS I was very active and never had to worry about what I ate. You see I was born with this awful disease, I love food.  The only way to keep the pounds off for me is exercise, and with my busy schedule these days it is seems almost impossible to keep up a regular routine. So I guess you have guessed my biggest BETTER is my weight… well my health in general. That is my first BETTER on my list. Take better care of myself.  I have already started taking a long hard look at how I eat.  Early in December I decided to cut out the sugar and flour in my diet. I am happy to say it has paid off, down 8 pounds. That is great considering I usually put on 5 or 10 pounds during the Christmas holiday.  Now comes the hard part, sticking to a fitness plan. When I work out I do enjoy it, but I seem to find a hundred things to do instead of being active. This morning I did get up and go for a brisk walk. That is my better, it was better than laying in bed stressing over the million things I need to do for  my blog and my family.

My first BETTER this year will definitely be better health and fitness habits. I need to be a better healthier me in order to complete my millions of other BETTERS I have on my list. So, I am giving you, my readers, a very important job. You will be my accountability partners. The first of each month I will be posting a pic and informing everyone about how I am progressing. Along the way there will also be fitness tips and healthy eating recipes. Let’s make this fun. If your better is a healthier you send me your tips and progress photos on my Facebook page. We don’t have to be in this alone. Come on Cheer Moms, no ALL moms, and let’s support each other to be the BEST moms we can be in 2014.

Here is my January 1st 2014 photos. It was taken on Christmas Eve. My weight that day was 275 pounds. I am shooting for at least 15 pounds by February 1st. Wish me luck. Good luck to everyone who is trying to improve themselves in 2014.

  13. We totally need to motivate each other in our weight loss goals, and start walking together in the evenings. That is if it ever stops raining.

  14. Congrats on those 8lbs!! I am in the same boat as you, but luckily I’ve gone down a few pounds since last year, keeping it off is the hardest part for me.

  26. You can do this one step at a time! I too need to focus on myself for 2014. Too often we are too busy doing for everyone else, and we put ourselves at the bottom of the list like you said. Move yourself to the top! You deserve it.

  27. Great point about telling people, I stopped eating sugar/grains/dairy for a month last year and told everyone so I felt extra need to stick to it (I’m super stubborn!). Good luck!

  28. Great tips for keeping resolutions! I will certainly keep them in mind. Good luck to you in keeping yours. One of mine is to get healthier as well and not to rely solely on coffee for energy.

  29. Since one of my goals this year is weightloss I have started a food journal to help record and track my progress. A large part of my problem is not being aware.

  31. Happy New Year to You! Great ideas for getting healthy in 2014.

  32. I agree that planning is key. It’s too easy to fall off the wagon without a solid plan for those days when you aren’t feeling goal-oriented.

  33. Good luck with your goals. Once you’re determined, you will succeed!

  34. It is good that you have a plan for reaching all your goals for the new year. Making thing public is a good idea as well.

  35. Man I miss the days of high school where I could eat whatever I wanted and because I had gym and walked home everyday, never felt the effects of crap food. I’ll be following your journey – good luck!

  36. Aww good luck to you! I used to host a Fitness Friday w/linky and I am needing to lose about 25 lbs right now… so I was thinking about starting it back up. And hmm… since it’s Friday, maybe I should start it again today lol. Anyway, maybe you could link up? As far as your other resolutions, I want to make new friends too this year and also plan on being more positive! Good luck to us!

  37. I try not to make resolutions.. but one thing I don’t need to do is lose weight. I was sick for a long time and lost so much weight. Now I just try to maintain what I have. Happy New Year To You!!

  38. I`m with Terry.
I try not to make resolutions because I fail miserably at them.
I do make goals and weigh loss is an achievable one so keep plugging away!
I`m down 20lbs so far with 10 more to go.
If I can do it so can you!

  39. That’s on my to-do list this year too. I don’t make resolutions because I get all stressed about keeping them, lol. But I do make “goal” lists. I need to get in shape. Good luck with your goals!

  40. Good luck to the both of us. The main thing is just sticking with it, even if you have a down day. I am also trying to lose weight and will be getting a gym membership this weekend. My goal is to go atleast twice a week or more, and eat more healthy. We can do it!

  41. I love your optimism. It is great to start the year with positive thinking.

  49. I love reading about other bloggers resolutions. Lots of great goals!

  50. You can do it just do not set a goal so high it is not able to be done or so low it is too easy! I can not wait to hear how well you did – just try keeping up with all the cheer girls, you will lose weight in no time.

  51. Good luck! I hope it goes well for you I’ve not really made some resolutions this year as I never manage to keep them. x

  52. I find that telling people your resolutions actually does help to keep them, especially if your friends have similar goals as you can work on them together. A lot of people though still push that you shouldn’t tell your resolutions, like their wishes lol

  53. You can do it! I am also on my weight loss journey. Let me know if you would like to link up on anything or just be moral support for each other!!

  54. I love how you talk about your “better” self. That’s awesome. I am trying hard to stick to my resolutions because I want to be better too!

  55. I lost almost 70 pounds this past year and, it wasn’t easy, but definitely possible. Wishing you all the best this year and hope you meet your weight loss goals.

  58. Great tips! I find if you share your goals with people then you are more likely to follow through with it!

  59. Yep, right there with you girl. Making yourself accountable is a great step!

  60. Good luck to you. I have heard that cutting the sugar out is the best thing to do and I need to start with that and increasing my water intake. Looking forward to following your progress.

  61. I need to lose weight as well and I will be your cheerleader and even come alongside you! I have to do it for health reasons. I know you can do this!!! I will keep you accountable if you can keep me accountable. I will be checking in to see what you are doing I might even borrow some of your tips too!

  62. Cutting flour/gluten from your world will make your belly shrink!! Have you heard of the book called Wheat Belly? They have a Facebook page that is such a great motivator to stay away from that stuff! I have an allergy to gluten so I cannot eat it.. The pounds have been melting off since I walked away from gluten. Good for you to make these changes for the Better. Its awesome! Good Luck! I can’t wait to hear about your steps on this journey!

  63. Good luck on your weight loss journey. I have given up on mine and need to get back on it. Still trying to talk myself into it.

  64. I am also working on my weight loss in 2014!

  65. You can do it! I am also setting a goal this year to try to lose a few pounds or at least eat a lot healthier.
